Recently, Banker participated in a Q&A published by San Francisco Weekly. The piece touches on the emotional impact that creating an immensely personal film like The Genius of Marian can have, as well how Alzheimer’s and dementia truly affect entire families.
The Genius of Marian is a Conversation Starter
The feature also illuminates the taboo nature of Alzheimer’s and dementia. Like many sufferers, Pam White was very reluctant to discuss her diagnosis initially, or even disclose it to her closest friends. Making The Genius of Marian gave Banker and Pam the ability to talk about Alzheimer’s and how it affects families at a time when his mom was not yet comfortable talking openly about her own diagnosis.
Despite being experienced by so many, dementia and Alzheimer’s are still very misunderstood. That is why it so important to share our stories. By reaching out to others dealing with similar diagnoses, we can help support and educate one another, hopefully making this important subject feel less taboo. The sooner we can eradicate the stigma surrounding Alzheimer’s and dementia, the easier it will be to help ease the burdens of caregivers and sufferers.
